The Institute for Critical Social Inquiry will open part of its programming to the public – a series of lectures taught by this Summer's faculty cohort of Lewis Gordon (University of Connecticut) , Rashid Khalidi (Columbia University), Bernard Harcourt (Columbia University) and Homi Bhabha (Harvard University)
Homi Bhabha's lecture is entitled "Race, Time, Terror: On Affective Color.” This lecture explores Sigmund Freud's distinction between "traumatic neuroses"—produced in times of war or in the aftermath of sudden accidents involving fatal risks—and "spontaneous neuroses" that are habitually investigated and treated by analysis. It focuses on the brevity of the temporal occurrence of traumatic neuroses, whose powerful "affective coloring" transplants the subjects into an anxiety of imminent anticipation. In dealing with experiences of racial fixation, postcolonial and contemporary, the lecture argues for a distinction between systemic racism and traumatic racism.
Homi K. Bhabha is the Anne F. Rothenberg Professor of the Humanities in the Departments of English and Comparative Literature at Harvard University. He is the author of numerous pieces exploring postcolonial theory, psychoanalysis, contemporary art, and cosmopolitanism. His works include The Location of Culture, Nation and Narration, and forewords to Frantz Fanon’s major books. Bhabha has also written essays on William Kentridge, Anish Kapoor, Taryn Simon, and Matthew Barney, amongst others. He is a Corresponding Fellow at The British Academy, Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, and Critic-in-Residence at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

About the Institute:
The Institute for Critical Social Inquiry (ICSI) is designed to provide advanced graduate students and junior faculty from around the world with the opportunity to spend one week at the New School’s campus in Greenwich Village working closely with some of the most distinguished thinkers shaping the course of contemporary social inquiry. Each of these scholars will teach a week-long seminar on a foundational thinker or topic of contemporary concern in a series of hands-on, intensive, and intimate sessions.
