The Institute for Critical Social Inquiry will open part of its programming to the public – a series of lectures taught by this Summer's faculty cohort of Lewis Gordon (University of Connecticut) , Rashid Khalidi (Columbia University), Bernard Harcourt (Columbia University) and Homi Bhabha (Harvard University)

Rashid Khalidi's lecture is entitled "Britain, Ireland, and Palestine."

What links Ireland and Palestine to one another? They have inter-twined histories in several respects. Both were subjected to overseas settler colonialism – albeit of different natures and durations, with forceful British imperial intrusions producing intractable conflicts along national and religious lines with violent sequels that resonate down to the present day. They are also linked by a temporal coincidence involving British colonial rule. This ended in (most of) Ireland in 1922. During that precise period Britain occupied Palestine to implement a neo-colonial League of Nations mandate drafted to further the Zionist project, using tactics of repression honed in fighting the Irish.

Rashid Khalidi is Edward Said Professor of Arab Studies Emeritus at Columbia University. He received a B.A. from Yale University and a D. Phil. from Oxford University, and has previously taught at the Lebanese University, the American University of Beirut, and the University of Chicago. He was editor and later co-editor of the Journal of Palestine Studies, and has served as President of the Middle East Studies Association. He is the author of eight books, including The Hundred Years’ War on Palestine: A History of Settler-Colonialism and Resistance, 1917-2017, and of over 100 scholarly articles and book chapters, and has co-edited three books.

The Institute for Critical Social Inquiry (ICSI) is designed to provide advanced graduate students and junior faculty from around the world with the opportunity to spend one week at the New School’s campus in Greenwich Village working closely with some of the most distinguished thinkers shaping the course of contemporary social inquiry.
