This evening, Berlin-based artist Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley presents an interactive online artist talk. This is not a passive talk. You will be expected to work to get the answers you seek here. What is talked about and how it is spoken about will be determined by the effect your presence has. Be prepared to consider how your choices will affect everyone else.

Artist Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley uses the forms and imagery of video games to create works that consider "what archives have left out and how we can archive now.” Danielle works predominantly in animation, sound, performance and video games to communicate the experiences of being a Black Trans person. Danielle's practice focuses on recording the lives of Black Trans people, intertwining lived experience with fiction to imaginatively retell Trans stories. Spurred on by a desire to record the "History of Trans people both living and past" their work can often be seen as a Trans archive where Black Trans people are stored for the future. "Throughout history, Black queer and Trans people have been erased from the archives. Because of this it is necessary not only to archive our existence, but also the many creative narratives we have used and continue to use to share our experiences." Danielle's work has been shown in ICA, Arebyte, albright knox, David Kordansky, Quad, Arebyte, Science Gallery, MU, Barbican, Tate.

This event is part of PRACTICING THE ENVIRONMENT, a virtual, public-facing event series with artists, curators, activists, and scholars across the world who explore and engage in various aspects of environmental concern. This series reconsiders the supposed distinction between humans and nature; it is a distinction that has impacted notions of cultivation and place, as well as our relationships with plants and with each other. Focusing on visual arts and performance-based projects that engage notions of environment, these events consider the ecological implications of the materials that we work with, as well as the environmental frameworks and atmospheres that we work within. Hosted by faculty from the Department of the Arts at Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts at The New School. All events are free and open to the public, but prior registration is required.
