Please join us on October 22 for the book launch of Wen Liu's "Feeling Asian American: Racial Flexibility Between Assimilation and Oppression."
Asian Americans have long occupied a contradictory place in the American imagination: celebrated at times as the “model minority,” and at others vilified as perpetual foreigners. In this talk, Wen Liu examines contemporary Asian American identity formation within a historical and ongoing narrative of racial injury.
Rather than treating Asian Americans as a unified racial population, Liu approaches them as a raced, gendered, classed, and sexualized group, producing shifting boundaries of nation, geography, and citizenship. She explores how Asian Americanness emerges from the tension between oppression by the white majority and conditional offers of assimilation, and how it is continually shaped by movements and moments, from Black Lives Matter to anti-Asian violence, from transnational racial imaginaries to US–China inter-imperial rivalry.
This event is part of Lang at 40 special programing in commemoration of its 40th Anniversary and in celebration of liberal arts at The New School.
Presented by The New School's Gender and Sexualities Studies Institute.
Wen Liu is an Associate Research Fellow at the Institute of Ethnology, Academia Sinica, Taiwan. Informed by affect theory, critical race studies, and queer theory, her research investigates queer activism, transpacific geopolitics, and civilian security practice in the context of heightened geopolitical conflict. She is the author of "Feeling Asian American: Racial Flexibility between Assimilation and Oppression" (University of Illinois Press, 2024), which won the First Book Prize of the National Women’s Studies Association.
