In the 1980s, thousands of women across the United States poured into nightclubs and theaters to watch the muscle-bound men of Chippendales take off their clothes for their viewing pleasure. While the men dressed in the conventional uniforms of masculinity, as cops, soldiers, construction workers, the women who paid to see the Chippendales strip were — if news reports, the founders, and even Gloria Allred were to be believed — the embodiment of women’s liberation. But was watching the Chippendales phenomenon revolutionary?
Join us for a lively discussion with the host and historians behind the new Spotify podcast, WELCOME TO YOUR FANTASY, as we discuss how the Chippendales and the women who watched them together forged new representations of gender, sexuality, and consumerism — and what those mean for us today.
