University announcement regarding COVID-19
Parsons School of Design/The New School (Parsons/TNS) is actively monitoring the incidence of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in our region. Parsons/TNS is following guidance from local health departments and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding large gatherings, including CDC recommendations on preventing the spread of COVID-19.
At this time, our galleries are closed and all upcoming public programs and events are cancelled in order to protect the health of potential visitors, students, faculty, and staff.
Opening reception: Thursday, Feb 20, 6–8 p.m.
WE ARE HERE TO SERVE YOU, a traveling exhibition which began as a collaboration between Puerto Rican artist Natalia Almonte and Greek artist Nicole Economides, focuses on connecting artistic practices from Puerto Rico and Greece that are confronting similar intangible realities. The artworks on view — ranging from multimedia video installations and photography to performance and painting — critically engage with reductive perceptions of Greece and Puerto Rico and infuse ideas of cyclical futility and ephemerality with humor and double meaning, bringing cultural symbols and specificity to activism. They explore the repercussions of being in financial debt to political entities that already control their economies through colonial puppeteering. In debt, but not indebted to, conceptually permeates WE ARE HERE TO SERVE YOU, an intentionally sarcastic title suggesting an assumed foolishness that in actuality reveals our hyperconsciousness.
Curated by Natalia Almonte & Nicole Economides, MFA Fine Arts '19

Presented by Sheila C. Johnson Design Center at Parsons School of Design.
The Sheila C. Johnson Design Center is more than an exhibition space— it's the place where the university and the community come together. The Sheila C. Johnson Design Center houses the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Gallery and the Arnold and Sheila Aronson Galleries.
The award-winning design, by Rice+Lipka Architects, combines the ground floors of four historic buildings to form an urban quad that opens up the galleries to public view at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 13th Street. The center was made possible in part by a $7 million gift from Sheila C. Johnson, New School trustee and chair of Parsons’ board of governors.
Committed to amplifying diverse voices, The New School offers more than a thousand public programs and events each year, providing fresh perspectives and unique learning opportunities. These lectures, exhibitions, concerts, and performances feature prominent and emerging artists, activists, and thought leaders.
