Join us for an inspiring and thought-provoking conversation with global leaders in human rights, gender justice, and international governance. Voices of Resilience: Women Advocating for Women brings together four distinguished experts whose work spans advocacy, law, policy, science, and the pursuit of equity across borders. We will hear from Shirin Ebadi, Nadia Al-Sakkaf, Sima Simar, and Nashwa Eassa. The discussion will be moderated by Yasmine Ergas, an internationally recognized scholar of gender, rights, and global governance.
Together, the panelists will explore current challenges and emerging strategies for advancing human rights and gender equality in an era of profound global change. The audience will gain insight into the evolving international landscape and learn from the lived experience and expertise of the leaders who are shaping it.

2013 Business for Peace Laureate, Nadia A. Al-Sakkaf is a Yemeni researcher with expertise in media and digital safety, gender, sustainable development and socio-economic policies, democratic transitions, and climate change. She holds a PhD in Political Sciences from Reading University in the UK. She became Yemen's first female Minister when she became the Minister of Information in 2014.
Nashwa Eassa is a nano-particle physicist from Sudan. She is an assistant professor of physics at Al-Neelain University. She founded the non-governmental organization Sudanese Women in Sciences in 2013 and is a member of Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World's South African Institute of Physics.
Dr. Eassa is a currently a sponsored researcher at Imperial College London under the CARA Fellowship (Council for At-Risk Academics)
Shirin Ebadi won the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize for her significant efforts to promote democracy and human rights, particularly for women and children in Iran. She was one of Iran's first female judges. After Khomeini's revolution in 1979 she was dismissed. Ebadi opened a legal practice and began defending people who were being persecuted by the authorities. In the year 2000 she was imprisoned herself for having criticized her country's hierocracy.
Multiple Nobel Peace Prize Nominee, Dr. Sima Samar has dedicated her life to public service, humanitarian work and women’s empowerment. Since 2002 she has been the Chairperson of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) which holds human rights violators accountable and sets the human rights agenda in Afghanistan. Alongside this, Dr. Samar is the Chairperson of the Commission for the Prevention of Torture and was the Chairperson of the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (APF).
Yasmine Ergas is Director of the Human Rights, Gender, and Equity (HRGE) Concentration and Senior Lecturer in Discipline in International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. She also directs the program in Gender and Human Rights of Columbia University’s Institute for the Study of Human Rights, is a member of the Executive Committee of the University’s Institute for Research on Women, Gender and Sexuality, and is the co-convener of the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Council at Columbia University.Â
The Consortium is a globally expanding group of colleges and universities in the U.S., Bangladesh, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Jordan, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Each institutional member is committed to hosting at least one threatened scholar every year and these exiled hosted scholars constitute our scholar cohort. We work with them individually and together to try and lessen the profound sense of dislocation that exiled scholars suffer and which adversely impacts their intellectual and personal lives. Since 2021, the Consortium has expanded its mission to include finding placements for threatened Afghan and Ukrainian academics, students, and artists at Consortium member institutions.

Established in September 2018, the Consortium follows in the tradition of The New School’s original University in Exile created by The New School’s first President, Alvin Johnson, in 1933. The first University in Exile became the home of rescued, largely Jewish endangered scholars from Germany and France. Today, members of the New University in Exile Consortium are hosting nearly 300 exiled scholars from 30 countries.
