This course offers an interdisciplinary analysis of political discourse in Latin America, focusing not only on the production of messages by presidential elites but, crucially, on their reception, reinterpretation, and response by citizens. It integrates tools from Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) in its Latin American context (BolÃvar, 2018 and 2019) with sociopolitical studies on social movements, citizen empowerment, and public spheres (Zibechi, 2012). The primary objective is to examine how discourses of power, particularly those of the presidency, are interpreted, confronted, or appropriated by society, analyzing the gaps between the official message and collective perceptions.
This course offers an innovative perspective by enabling participants to understand how the ideas reflected in presidential speeches can influence the institutional order. It also equips them with tools to decipher discursive strategies and fosters a critical perspective that contributes to a more horizontal and participatory democracy.

The New University in Exile Consortium regularly offers a series of free, 10-week, co-led online seminars. The seminars are taught by two endangered scholars – one who is hosted by a Consortium member institution, and the other a colleague of their choice. The seminars are designed to reconnect endangered scholars with the academic community they have lost while in exile and reengage students from around the world with professors they have lost. They are free and open to anyone anywhere in the world with an internet connection.
