VISIBILIZE-ing Care Festival Symposium & Exhibition

Join us for the VISIBILIZE-ing Care Festival at The New School from March 4th–6th.

Care — often unseen and undervalued — is the social infrastructure that sustains life.

Across global and national contexts, we face interconnected crises: public health and climate emergencies, deepening socio‑economic and political polarization, widespread human rights violations, and wars that have caused profound loss and displacement. Running through these crises is a common thread: the systematic de‑prioritization of care—the erosion of what sustains life.

The Festival is both a symposium and exhibition. It aims to bring students, faculty, alumni, staff, and members of the public into a shared creative and critical inquiry into

the role of care in contemporary society.

The themes to be explored at the Festival include:

- Civic and Cultural Infrastructures of Care
- Care Labor, Value, and Collective Well‑Being

- Mental Health Across Generations, Organizations and Geographies
- Practices of Repair, Reuse, and Environmental Stewardship
- Participatory Rituals for Human Connection. Belonging, and Self-Care
- Material Narratives of Identity, Memory, and Community
- Support Systems in Higher Education

This event is free with registration.

Performance:  Death be no More

Wendy Yang, Student, Mannes

This piano composition mainly shows my sorrow for political violence, life and death. I didn’t grow up in the United States so I know little about the situation. I can’t get why someone dies just for others disagreeing with their words. Every day, we see news of death and pain in the media. I want to show sorrow for these lives and my powerlessness. The world should be better.

Traces of Motherhood

A presentation of visual documentation, survey findings, and early insights from an art-and-design investigation into motherhood. It examines how caregiving shapes identity, memory, and daily experience, highlighting the traces motherhood leaves on both bodies and creative practice. Ethical Transition Strategies

Ethical Transition Strategies is a structured approach for designers engaged in social or community-based projects who want to exit responsibly and ensure lasting impact. Transitions are often rushed or unclear, leaving communities or partners without the tools to sustain the work. This framework guides designers to plan thoughtful, people-centered transitions through clear phases and milestones. It emphasizes four dimensions of sustainability: leadership, financial, relational, and momentum. By supporting alignment and shared decision-making, it reframes transition as a vital part of the design process. Created for designers, leaders, and educators, it ensures work continues meaningfully beyond the designer’s involvement.

Urban PlayLab

Urban PlayLab is a modular, gamified framework that embeds play into the design process itself, not just the outcomes. Intended for community co-design sessions, it transforms strategic design methods into simple, low-barrier games. Grounded in appreciative inquiry, the toolkit uses adaptable structures with tools like cards, boards, and drawing surfaces to spark reflection, imagination, and collaboration. By prioritizing playable processes, Urban PlayLab fosters deeper engagement, inclusive participation, and creative problem-solving. This playful approach helps teams and communities generate insights through curiosity and iteration. Ultimately, it supports more resilient, connected communities by making design more accessible, participatory, and fun.

Evolution lab

Evolution Lab empowers organizations with human-centered design rooted in biomimicry to grow financial and societal value in harmony. Inspired by nature, we bridge design thinking with actionable strategy, guiding growth like living systems do. Our three-stage methodology includes anchoring roots (internal growth), structuring the stem (resilience), and blooming, over and over (scalable impact). We customize strategic design, then educate, embed, and enable organizations to thrive—not just survive. We believe profit and purpose can align, creating a competitive edge. Serving public, private, and nonprofit sectors, Evolution Lab offers regenerative, scalable strategies that integrate innovation, impact, and organic growth into one living system.

Cooperating Against Carbon

Cooperating Against Carbon (CAC) is an initiative designed to help small residential co-ops in New York City reduce their carbon emissions and meet Local Law 97 requirements. The project focuses on three pillars: building community connections through peer learning and building tours; amplifying voices by creating accessible resources and simplified tools; and advocating for policy changes to address electrical infrastructure barriers. CAC aims to bridge the gap between NYC's climate goals and the practical challenges facing small co-ops through collaborative learning, resource sharing, and community support, helping buildings transition to low-carbon operations while improving residents' quality of life.

Kindship is a proactive planning tool designed to support Hispanic families in New York City at risk of separation. Through a tech-assisted platform, it helps families identify trusted caregivers, navigate difficult but necessary conversations, document plans, and share access in case of emergencies. We meet families where they are—at schools, community-based organizations, and in trusted spaces—and communicate in-language and in-culture to ensure clarity and respect. CareSync

CareSync is a personalised health assistant designed to streamline care coordination and daily life management for individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and their caregivers. Through smart reminders, voice-assisted support, and seamless caregiver collaboration, CareSync empowers users to foster independence while reducing caregiver burden.

Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) is a condition characterised by changes in cognitive functioning beyond those expected for a person’s age, but which are not severe enough to be described as dementia. Healthcare services for individuals with MCI are currently fragmented, often prioritising immediate needs like medication reminders rather than fostering long-term independence. As a result, caregivers must rely on disconnected tools—notes, phone calls, and multiple apps—to manage daily care, often leading to missed medications, forgotten appointments, and added stress. While existing solutions provide basic scheduling, they fail to bridge the communication gap, affecting both patient care and caregiver well-being.

Ugly Catering

Ugly Catering is a sustainability-focused catering initiative that explores the intersection of food, design, and environmental impact. The project seeks to challenge conventional perceptions of beauty and waste in the food system by transforming cosmetically imperfect produce, often discarded despite being edible, into high-quality, visually compelling culinary experiences.
By integrating elements of food styling, design, and storytelling, Ugly Catering aims to promote sustainable consumption practices and create behavioral change through hand-ons experience. The project emphasizes the value of surplus and “ugly” ingredients, demonstrating their potential to contribute to gourmet, aesthetically-driven dining experiences without compromising taste or quality.
This work contributes to broader conversations around food waste, sustainability, and cultural attitudes toward consumption and appearance, while also proposing an alternative model for eco-conscious food services that engage both the senses and the conscience.

Ledger - C2B Data

C2B Data is a consumer-first data management platform that puts individuals in control of how their personal information is used, shared, and valued. In today’s digital economy, data is one of the most valuable assets—but users rarely benefit from the data they generate. C2B Data flips that model by allowing users to manage their data permissions, view past data transactions, and choose who can access their information.

The platform offers transparency into how data is collected and shared, while enabling users to take meaningful actions—like pausing sharing, deleting data, or customizing the types of data they allow access to. Users can also explore value-based offers from brands and increase their data’s value through simple engagements such as surveys or preference settings. Whether it’s cash, discounts, or social impact rewards, users decide how and when they want to exchange their data.
