Kiel Moe's new book, Unless, dissects the construction ecology, material geographies, and world-systems of the most modern of modern architectures: the Seagram Building. In his critical analysis of the environmental impact of architecture and urban real estate, Moe focuses on how humans and nature interact with the thin crust of the planet through architecture and how the immense material, energy and labor involved in building require a fresh interpretation of the ecological and social potential of design. He argues that unless architects begin to describe buildings as terrestrial events and artifacts, they will―to our collective and professional peril―continue to operate outside the key environmental dynamics and key political processes of this century.

Kiel Moe, AIA, FAAR, is a practicing architect and professor of architecture. His research and pedagogy focuses on an agenda for design and energy that is at once more ecologically and architecturally ambitious. Kiel has published several books on architecture including Empire, State & Building; Wood Urbanism: From the Molecular to the Territorial; Insulating Modernism: Isolated and Non-Isolated Thermodynamics in Architecture; Convergence: An Architectural Agenda for Energy.
He received the 2013 Boston Design Biennial award, the 2011 Architecture League of New York Prize, the 2011 AIA National Young Architect award, and numerous design awards for individual projects from the AIA, North American Wood Design Awards, and Boston Society of Architects, among others.
Dr. Arta Yazdanseta is the Director of the Master of Architecture Program at Parsons School of Design. Her research explores Bioclimatic Envelopes at the intersection of design, building performance, and plant biophysical ecology. As a Director and educator, she is committed to the development of novel pedagogical approaches to environmental design and education through addressing the perceived dichotomy between poetics of design and building science.
Arta earned her Doctor of Design and Master of Design in Energy and Environments from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and her professional architectural degree from the Pratt Institute. Her research contributions have been published in Empire, State & Building, Essays On Thermodynamics: Architecture and Beauty, and Phyto: Principles and Resources for Site Remediation and Landscape Design.
