In the wake of numerous killings of African Americans at the hands of police (from Eric Garner and George Floyd to Sandra Bland and Breonna Taylor) the Black Lives Matter social justice movement has led to renewed conversations in America about the ongoing legacies of race and racism. Yet, despite growing public support for the movement, many Americans remain unclear about clear elements of the movement. What exactly is the Black Lives Matter movement? What are its key principles? What are its demands? And how, exactly, can this movement be used to build a better America?
As we recount the origins of BLM and the social context that the movement emerged from, students will be encouraged to learn from the past and seize the energy of today‘s movement to create a world that works for everyone.
