Migration, along with various humanitarian, social, and political issues, has been identified as one of the main challenges of the 21st century (Lopez-Claros et al., 2020). Successful coping with this challenge requires a sound understanding of the psychological processes underlying refugees’ and local residents’ perceptions of, and responses to, the demands resulting from immigration.
To this end, Professor Gerald Echterhoff will present a relevant framework on the Psychological Antecedents of Refugee Integration (PARI; Echterhoff et al., 2020, Perspectives on Psychological Science). According to the framework, forcedness and associated perils of migration are assumed to be distinctive factors of refugee migration. In turn, perceptions and subjective representations of forcedness and related perils are assumed to trigger specific psychological mechanisms (e.g., loss of control, diminished agency perceptions) that affect responses to immigration-related demands and stressors. He will present relevant empirical findings for both refugees and local residents of the receiving society. The talk will conclude with a discussion of open issues and perspectives for future research.
Gerald Echterhoff is the 2025-2026 Visiting Heuss Professor in Psychology at The New School for Social Research.
