Menotti's forgotten 1954 Broadway masterpiece won the Pulitzer and was named "Best Musical" by the NY Drama Critic's Circle. Now it finally returns to the city that inspired it.

For the first time in over 15 years, Gian Carlo Menotti's Pulitzer-winning masterpiece The Saint of Bleecker Street returns to the city that inspired it. Mannes presents a homecoming for this important lost work, written for and premiered on Broadway in 1954.The following year it won both the Pulitzer Prize in Music and the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Musical (one of the few operas to ever win). The show ran for 92 performances, but has rarely been seen since. Set in Little Italy in 1954, it's a gritty, emotional drama that tells the story of a mystical young woman who has the stigmata and sees angels. Her deeply agnostic brother wants to protect her, and the neighborhood wants her to be a saint. The Saint of Bleecker Street is a propulsive drama with soaring melodies about immigrants, faith, community, and family.

The production is directed by a Mannes alum, the Argentinian opera stage director and Princeton Hodder Fellow Malena Dayen, and it features a newly commissioned chamber orchestration created especially for Mannes' students. The school is thrilled to offer NY audiences a chance to see this undervalued American classic.
