The Graduate Programs in International Affairs and the Foreign Press Association present: The Homecoming: Born in France but Searching for a Future in Africa, screening and discussion with BBC Editorial Lead Nathalie Jimenez.
Africa Eye's Homecoming' explores how marginalized communities in France are responding to rising nationalism, police violence, and social tensions - themes that resonate far beyond the country’s borders. The documentary highlights the young French people of African descent, turning to the continent in search of, what they say, is a better life. It explores this "reverse migration", following their journeys to Senegal, the opposite their parents made decades earlier. All while capturing the challenges they face in building a new life away from what they know. The film sheds light on themes of belonging, identity, and the evolving relationship between Africa and its diaspora, offering a fresh perspective on migration and cross-cultural ties.
A driving force behind The Homecoming, Jimenez's debut feature-length film draws inspiration from her own upbringing in Europe. The project reflects her commitment to uncovering untold narratives—transcending traditional reporting to craft immersive, human-centered stories that resonate worldwide.
Conversation to include Sean Jacobs and Kristen Saloomey, board member of the Foreign Press Association, which represents US based journalists working for foreign media outlets.
Presented by the Julien J. Studley Graduate Programs in International Affairs at the Schools of Public Engagement.
Nathalie Jimenez is an Emmy-nominated field producer covering the Americas for BBC News—one of the youngest to do so for the broadcaster. Kristen Saloomey is a board member of the Foreign Press Association who has been honoured by the United Nations Foundation for her investigative work on the source of Haiti’s cholera epidemic.
