New School historian Amanda Bellows will be in-conversation with students Stella Crouch, Kila Lavarias, and Lola Page about her new book, The Explorers: A New History of America in Ten Expeditions. They will discuss the remarkable lives of overlooked adventurers from diverse backgrounds whose discoveries shaped U.S. history.

The Explorers rediscovers a diverse group of Americans who went to the western frontier and beyond, traversing the farthest reaches of the globe and even penetrating outer space in their endeavor to find the unknown. Many escaped from lives circumscribed by racism, sexism, poverty, and discrimination as they took on great risk in unfamiliar territory to exercise personal freedom.
This event is part of the Critical History Today lecture series.

Amanda Bellows is a Teaching Associate in the Department of Historical Studies and serves as the Undergraduate History Student Adviser. She is also the author of American Slavery and Russian Serfdom in the Post-Emancipation Imagination, and has published writing in academic journals as well as the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Smithsonian, and elsewhere.
