This panel brings together scholars and practitioners from the African region and China, as well as the US and the European region to share their work with an audience who is interested in counter-hegemonic narratives on the theme of relations between the African continent and China. The diverse backgrounds and research interests of the speakers will ensure that the audience is presented with a comprehensive overview of the complex issues at hand.

Professor of Anthropology, Tsinghua Institute for Advanced Study in Humanities and Social Sciences and Department of Sociology. She researches on agrarian change and food sovereignty in China and China-Africa links. She is interested in studying labor, gender, rural-urban relations, socialism, post-socialist transformations, neoliberal capitalism. Before joining Tsinghua, she taught in Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Barry Sautman is a political scientist (PhD Columbia University) and lawyer (JD UCLA, LLM NYU) who primarily teaches international law, China/US relations, contemporary China, ethnicity and nationalism. One of his areas of research has been ethnic politics in China and comparative perspective, including ethnic policies, the political economic and legal aspects of the Tibet and Xinjiang issues.  His other area is China-Africa links, including political economy, labor rights, migration between China and Africa and interactions between Chinese and Africans, representations and perceptions of China and Chinese in Africa, and the supposed strategic rivalry between the US and China in Africa. Fadhel Kaboub is an associate professor of economics at Denison University (on leave), and the president of the Global Institute for Sustainable Prosperity. He is also a member of the Independent Expert Group on Just Transition and Development, and serves as senior advisor with Power Shift Africa. He has recently served as Under-Secretary-General for Financing for Development at the Organisation of Southern Cooperation in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Dr. Kaboub is an expert on designing public policies to enhance monetary and economic sovereignty in the Global South, build resilience, and promote equitable and sustainable prosperity. His recent work focuses on Just Transition, Climate Finance, and transforming the global trade, finance, and investment architecture.Â

Eric Olander is the co-founder of the China Global South Project, an independent, non-partisan media initiative dedicated to exploring every facet of China’s engagement in Africa. Eric is a fluent Mandarin-speaker and a longtime China-watcher with more than 25 years of journalism experience at many of the world’s leading media companies including CNN, the BBC, and FRANCE24 among others. He received his undergraduate degree in East African History from the University of California at Berkeley and holds a master’s degree in Chinese Public Affairs from the University of Hong Kong.
Nada Trigui is a Policy Analyst and Chief Operations Officer at the Tunisian Observatory of Economy (OTE). Nada graduated in 2017 from Tunis Business School, University of Tunis in Political Economy. She previously worked as a freelance journalist and researcher for various organizations with a particular focus on issues of justice, trade, the environment and food sovereignty. Her writings appear in Middle East Eye, Monthly Review, and OTE.
Oussama Dhieb is a PhD student in Political Science at University of Carthage- Tunis, and a University Teaching Assistant in Chinese language and culture and the University of Carthage, Department Of Oriental Languages. He also works as a Sworn Chinese Translator for Tunisia’s Ministry of Justice and worked as a Chinese translator in Algeria for several years. He holds various certificates from universities including Virginia University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the Geneva Institute for Human Rights and Yale University.Â
Mikaela Nhondo Erskog Mika is an educator and researcher at the Tricontinental Institute for Social Research. She is part of the Pan Africanism Today Secretariat, which coordinates the regional articulation of the International People’s Assembly and is also part of the No Cold War coordination committee, a peace platform promoting multilateralism and maximum global cooperation. She is also part of Dongsheng, an international collective of researchers interested in Chinese politics and society, and hosts The Crane: An Africa-China Podcast.
Carlos Oya is a professor of Political Economy of Development in SOAS. His main research interests are: labor relations and employment, economic transformation, agrarian political economy, development policy, poverty, and research methodology. He worked for several years in government in Mozambique, where he also did extensive field research on rural labor markets and rural poverty. Carlos recently led a project on structural transformations and employment outcomes in infrastructure construction and manufacturing sectors in Ethiopia and Angola, with a special focus on Chinese firms.
