Hosted by rising thesis students from the MFA Design & Technology program at Parsons School of Design, TELEPRESENCE is an exploration into what it means for MFA DT’s large, diverse, and international student body to open up the potential of the nonphysical – to organize and share work collectively in an exclusively digital space. The three-day expo will encompass seven themes and will include a digital showcase of student work, workshops, and artist talks.

In Conversation: Morehshin Allahyari, Sougwen Chung on Defragmented Identities and Uncoded Territories
How can emerging technologies help us reflect on and intervene in the complex social and political systems shaping our world? This event brings together two artists asking these questions across diverse media and conceptual approaches.
Morehshin Allahyari wields technology as a “philosophical toolset,” imagining poetic worlds populated by 3D printed and modeled mythical figures and speculative, forbidden, or destroyed objects. Sougwen Chung creates new tools to collaborate with machine intelligences, uncovering new relationships between humans and robots and new frontiers for creativity in a posthuman future. In this talk, Allahyari and Chung will discuss their practices through the lens of exploring potential futures.

This interactive tutorial will include an introductory demonstration of the use of Grasshopper, a visual scripting environment embedded into the 3D modeling package Rhinoceros and a very useful computational design tool. We will create something fun and parametric which will make you confident to start exploring the software by yourself! Completely code free and conducive to beginners. Participants should have Rhino 5 or above installed on their computers. Note: Rhino provides a free 90-day full trial version.

2020 is the first time many feel physically distant and isolated from their local communities. Yet, for some of us, limited access is an everyday occurrence. While we are actively seeking new ways of connecting and existing beyond fixed infrastructures, we want to take a step back and look at this as a chance to create more accessibility for all, stepping together beyond the purely physical space. How can we be present in spaces beyond our local reach or that are off-limit due to infrastructural failures or situational circumstances?
In this online dialogue, we will discuss ableist fallacies, accessibility, and immersion beyond the physical realm with artist, activist, and educator, Kevin Gotkin.

The class will show an interesting example of AR narrative, then guide participants to make this effect in Spark AR. The effect will make use of a photo taken by themselves, so they can apply it to the environment they are in rather than only follow my example. While recent advances in technology may seem to make our lives easier, they have also paved the way for surveillance capitalism, reinforced deep structural inequality, and further disempowered people of color. How does one work in the technology sector while subverting these systems of power—or, what does it look like to dismantle these structures and work outside them completely?
In this panel, we will bring artists, researchers, and policymakers together to discuss how to challenge the status quo and hold those in power accountable for the broader social implications of bias in technology while creating the tools needed to allow for a rebuilding and reimagination of an equitable future for those currently disempowered.
Ruha Benjamin is an Associate Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University, founder of the Just Data Lab, and author of Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code among many other publications.
Ingrid Burrington’s work focuses on mapping, documenting, and studying the often-overlooked or occluded landscapes of the internet (and the ways in which the entire planet has become, in effect, a “landscape of the internet.") Her work has been supported by Eyebeam, Data & Society Research Institute, the Studio for Creative Inquiry, and the Center for Land Use Interpretation.
Mutale Nkonde is a researcher, policy analyst and cultural creator. In 2019 she started AI for the People, a non profit creative agency while holding fellowships at Harvard and Stanford. AI for the People partners with journalists, television producers, filmmakers and visual artists to produce content that translates their computational analysis into content on how advanced technical systems become encoded with racist and sexist logic to general audiences.

The concept of spatial presence and face-to-face human connection is getting radically transformed. We are actively seeking new ways of connecting and existing beyond tightly bound physical boundaries. How can we create meaningful community and companionship when we are physically absent from the spaces where they should occur? How can we transcend into spaces beyond our physical reach? What are the hidden virtues of nonphysical presence and what will fill the spaces we leave behind when we remove ourselves from these realms?
In this online dialogue, we will discuss new visions of interaction, non-human connections, and engagement with designer, author, and educator Carla Diana. Carla Diana has designed a range of products from robots to connected home appliances. She writes and lectures frequently on the social impact of robotics and emerging technology and created the world’s first children’s book on 3D printing, LEO the Maker Prince. She is a co-author of a forthcoming book on smart object design to be published by Harvard Business Review Press and currently co-hosts the Robopsych Podcast, a biweekly discussion around design and the psychological impact of human-robot interaction.

Collectives, clubs, crews – in theory, a healthy creative community can amplify our artistic practices and make creative experiences more exciting and accessible. Where do we find those communities beyond art school? How can we build, maintain, and expand meaningful collaborations, exchanges, and relationships with other artists and create platforms for us and others?
This artist talk will focus on the methods and impacts of active and deliberate community building and how to take steps towards becoming part of a collective that provides the conditions to fulfill each individual's creative needs.
Lauren Goshinski is a curator and event producer who works at the intersection of music, performance, digital art and the moving image. A creator of festivals, event series, exhibitions, conferences and new work commissions, Goshinski’s platforms aim to showcase the emerging and critical voices and technologies of our time. Navigating vital underground spaces and high-profile platforms, she has developed programs that build bridges between regional and international creative scenes. Her projects are uniquely multidisciplinary: merging sound, art, entertainment, critique, and play into participatory, site-responsive experiences.
