Don’t underestimate the impact that a productive relationship between managers and employees has on the immediate and long-term success of the entire team. This essential training for managers, new and experienced alike, will refresh your toolkit, encourage understanding of critical university procedures and help you ensure that your team feels welcomed, connected, and set up for success. Join us to learn about what a well-thought-out onboarding plan looks like and how following management best practices including managing performance will give employees all the tools they need to succeed during their careers at The New School.
This session is the first session in our two part Manager Essentials Training series. We recommend attending Part II: Putting Theory into Practice after you have completed this session.
Please note: this workshop is offered for New School staff only.
Presented by Human Resources.

She finds personal satisfaction in empowering employees' growth and developing their knowledge and skills. She is a New School graduate with a master’s in media studies and has an understanding and appreciation of current media scholarship and communication. Ali is proud to be a part of The New School community and enjoys working in higher education because of it’s commitment to lifelong learning. As a recent new mom, she is enjoying experiencing firsthand how children learn about the world and themselves through play, and wonders what insights she can bring to the workplace.
Ilana Tolpin Levitt's work is at the intersection of Human Resources, mental well being and career development. Her HR experience, combined with her counseling, brings a holistic and comprehensive perspective to leadership, workplace dynamics, career satisfaction, and fulfillment. Ilana’s focus with many clients is a deep exploration of the psychological roots that impact career development and workplace dysfunction.
Ilana’s book, “What’s Mom Still Got to Do With It?” integrates her extensive knowledge and experience about mother-daughter relationships with her expertise in career development. She is a licensed mental health counselor in NY (LMHC) and Licensed Professional Counselor in New Jersey (LPC), a nationally certified career counselor and just completed a certificate from Wharton in Talent Management.
She holds a BA in Psychology from Binghamton University, a MEd in Counseling Psychology and MA in Organizational Psychology from Columbia University’s Teachers College and is a Certified Career Counselor with the National Career Development Association (NCDA). Kar Estrella is the newest member of the Organizational Development team at The New School, serving as an HR Employee Engagement Specialist. With a background rich in community engagement, Kar brings four years of experience as Community Engagement Chair in the Bonner Leader Program. This role cultivated her passion for creating strong communities and vibrant cultures, particularly within the university environment.
Kar’s responsibilities include employee relations, assisting with staff training implementation, event planning, and onboarding new staff members. Her transition from IT Central to HR was inspired by her participation in the Building Your Career Mentorship Circle, which empowered them to intentionally pursue growth within The New School.
As a first-generation child of immigrants, Kar is deeply committed to supporting BIPOC communities. Her involvement in the Educational Opportunity Fund at Montclair State University, where she graduated, strengthened their dedication to creating spaces for underrepresented groups to thrive.
