ONLINE | Speculative Communities: A roundtable on the new book by Aris Komporozos-Athanasiou

On Wednesday, January 26, the Heilbroner Center for Capitalism Studies will host Aris Komporozos-Athanasiou for a virtual event on his new book, Speculative Communities: Living with Uncertainty in a Financialized World.  The book is available for sale at The Strand.

Speakers will include Arjun Appadurai (New York University), Melinda Cooper (Australian National University), and Jamieson Webster (The New School), with moderation by Julia Ott (The New School).

In Speculative Communities, Aris Komporozos-Athanasiou examines the ways that speculation has moved beyond financial markets to shape fundamental aspects of our social and political lives. As ordinary people make exceptional decisions, such as the American election of a populist demagogue or the British vote to leave the European Union, they are moving from time-honored and tested practices of governance, toward the speculative promise of a new, more uncertain future. This book shows how even our methods of community building have shifted to the speculative realm as social media platforms enable and amplify our volatile wagers.

Aris Komporozos-Athanasiou is Associate Professor of Sociology at University College London, where he leads the Sociology & Social Theory Research Group. His research explores the multifarious impact of financial markets on social and political life in 20th and 21st century capitalism. His current book project, tentatively titled Real Fake, is an intellectual history of distortion technologies and capitalist myth-making.

Arjun Appadurai is Professor Emeritus at NYU Steinhardt's Department of Media, Culture, and Communication and a cultural anthropologist.

Melinda Cooper is Professor of Sociology at Australian National University.

Jamieson Webster is a psychoanalyst in private practice and a part-time professor at The New School for Social Research.

Julia Ott is Associate Professor of History at The New School for Social Research and Director of Heilbroner Center for Capitalism Studies.

You can purchase the book at The Strand Bookstore in New York City or online.

About Heilbroner Center

The Robert L. Heilbroner Center for Capitalism Studies is a hub for interdisciplinary scholarship and applied research on issues relating to contemporary forms of capitalism. The Center promotes collaborative work between academic disciplines and exchanges between scholars and practitioners. We support public events, working groups, graduate and undergraduate courses, and student and faculty research. We also sponsor annual Visiting Professorships for scholars outside The New School community. The Center seeks to develop a common language through which the forms and processes of capitalism can be understood, analyzed, reformulated, and reformed — with rigor, with precision, and in a manner that is accessible to the broadest possible audience.
