Modern interior design study was launched at Parsons in 1906 and continues to evolve as a socially engaged design practice that considers the complex challenges of the 21st century. The BFA Interior Design program guides students through a rigorous, four-year curriculum that supports critical thinking, iterative design processes, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Working across scales of the interior, students learn respectful and responsible ways to design for health, well-being, and the delight of humans and all living beings. Building on a legacy of innovative practice at Parsons, the BFA Interior Design program engages with prevalent socioeconomic and ecological issues with a mission to contribute to a more just, sustainable, and harmonious environment through interior design. We aspire to be an agile, responsive, radical, and inclusive program, educating designers who are leaders, listeners, collaborators, and contributors to a better world through biodiversity.
The BFA Interior Design Program maintains an educational philosophy that foregrounds ecological sustainability, accessibility, health, and safety through a series of interactive studios and seminar classes over eight semesters. These classes are framed from an issues-based perspective, crafted to expose students to various contexts in which interior designers may work.
We see the faculty as expert facilitators rather than the final authority in the classroom, who foster a shared learning environment that brings multiple, diverse student and faculty perspectives to the curriculum.
Our pedagogical philosophy celebrates individual agency, creativity, and collaborative opportunities through an extensive offering of inter-College and inter-University electives. Interdisciplinarity brings opportunity for unique conceptual inspiration and in-depth contextual knowledge coupled with discipline-specific, essential technical skills.
The 21st century has presented unquestionable challenges for our global community. Interior Design needs to respond to a climate emergency that is the resounding plight of our generation. The climate crisis reveals and amplifies many other stressors, including deeply embedded systems of racial, social, and economic inequality. Interior Design educators and practitioners alone cannot solve these systemic problems, but we can contribute materially and conceptually to a more just and equitable world. We aim to empower our students to understand the impact, consequences, and opportunities that our work offers and to serve and advocate for marginalized groups in every circumstance. We strive to teach a design process that upends top-down, hegemonic problem solving to foreground community-engaged participatory design processes. We aspire for Parsons BFA Interior Design graduates to redefine and expand the purview of interior design, and to champion regenerative and resilient design thought and methodologies that foster ecological stewardship.
