2019: Nicholas Vladimir Elbakidze - Under The Table
“Under The Table” is a physical manifestation of the American saying of the same name used for illegal payments typically used for illegal services. This sculptural work encapsulates the dark realities of living in a Capitalist society in which money is used to acquire prestige. The ghastly underbelly of an otherwise utilitarian coffee table is exposed. Used chewing gum, which would regularly be found under a coffee table, is found in copious amounts along with US currency, which is completely unrelated to the scenario. This brings about the connection between the work’s witty title and materiality. In the wake of the college admissions scandal, William Rick Singer unethically facilitated college admissions for more than 750 families through the use of bribery in order to receive spots in prestigious institutions. From this scandal, questions regarding the connections between wealth and higher education have surfaced. “Under The Table” speaks to the current political climate surrounding the richest parents manipulating their resources into getting what they want, no matter the cost. The tongue and cheek humor expressed in this work should not be taken lightly; underneath the humor is something much more serious. This work is a call to act against corruption.
2018: Vidushi Jain - Concretized Man
Concretized man is the one who has mushroomed out of the ever rising concrete blocks that he eventually discovers are as much as part of his being as they were till now only a part of the background. Concretized to the point of being dehumanised, he sits there upon a void unknown to his complacent now ruminative self that is going to be sucked into that abyss sooner than later. The impact of the present day so called civilization, globalization and concretization that is actually an extension of the extreme urbanisation leading further to the commoditization of us all cumulatively. We have been reduced to that very stony and hardened form almost as if made up of the blocks of concrete that the man in the picture is made of. We have become a replication of that which we inhabit.
