Through the Lens Darkly: A Conversation with Ava DuVernay

Join celebrated filmmaker, Ava DuVernay, and New School student and actor, Kaci Walfall, as they discuss their intimate knowledge of black expressive culture in cinematic, theatrical, and other performance-based mediums. Moderated by Jermaine Hill, Dean of the School of Drama at The New School's College of Performing Arts, this timely discussion will illuminate critical dimensions of black visual culture in past, present, and future areas of entertainment industries.

Through the Lens Darkly: A Conversation with Ava DuVernay is part of the Pedagogy as Praxis speaker series — a series of bespoke events designed & developed by Dr. Gabrielle Williams, Assistant Professor of Literary Studies at Eugene Lang College & 2024-2025 Provost Faculty Fellow.

Drawing from the work of praxis-based scholars such as W.E.B. DuBois, Paulo Freire, and Ida B. Wells, Pedagogy as Praxis showcases speakers whose disparate lives evidence their commitment to “practicing what they preach” in manifesting egalitarian ideas of educative practices to effect positive change in and beyond academic worlds.

Presented by The Provost's Office.
