The Webinar will begin with a keynote presentation by Professor Judith Butler, Maxine Elliot Professor of Comparative Literature at UC Berkeley, whose talk is titled, "The Human, Humanities, and Human Rights." She will focus on the shutting down of gender studies programs globally and how this connects to the issue of human rights.
The keynote will be followed by presentations from scholar-members of the New University in Exile Consortium. They will discuss the rise of authoritarianism, anti-intellectualism, and censorship globally, offering perspectives from Turkey, China, and Brazil. The presentations will call attention to restrictions on academic freedom and free speech in each country, and highlight strategies academics use to push back on governmental repression.
