In summer 2020 and spring 2021, The New School offered a university-wide course titled “New York City Colloquium: Remaking NYC,” an investigation into the city’s process of recovery and reimagination in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The course examined long-standing social, political, and economic issues facing New Yorkers that the pandemic has only exacerbated, including racial inequality, housing insecurity, and climate change, amongst others. Faculty members challenged students to be bold and creative in imagining how New York can be remade into a more equitable, sustainable, and livable place.
This virtual exhibit showcases a selection of some of the more ambitious, inventive, and compelling student projects submitted for the spring 2021 edition of the class. These projects highlight the breadth, depth, and interdisciplinary nature of the New School’s programs and the acumen, creativity, and verve of our student body.
The New York City Colloquium is a signature course of The New School that was offered as an online class in summer 2020 and in a hybrid format in spring 2021. In total, over three dozen faculty members and more than 250 students came together to study New York during an intense period of reimagination. As the world continues to grapple with the COVID pandemic, New York City has been confronting a complex array of issues that calls for bold change in the logics of the city. New School faculty across multiple colleges, schools, and programs presented their research on how various communities, industries, and policymakers are devising innovations to move forward the project of remaking the city.
Presentation topics included:
● Equitable approaches to urban recovery centered around ethics of abolitionist love
● Writing about trauma
● Economic recovery and social justice
● Climate change and resilience
● Indigenous perspectives on environmental justice
● Democratic and participatory urban space
● Mutual aid programs in the cultural industries
A selection of faculty lectures from the summer 2020 edition of the course can be viewed here.
Bringing together faculty and students from programs across the university resulted in a set of lectures, panels, and group discussions that were highly dynamic, interactive, and truly transdisciplinary in nature. Faculty encouraged students to challenge their assumptions, to think outside the box, and to be experimental in designing their class projects. The projects presented here capture some of the bold, creative, and socially-conscious student work submitted for the course in spring 2021.
