This talk will share material from two recent books which, by very different means, defamiliarize recent developments in generative AI, affording the opportunity to think expansively about the many ways that humans have used algorithmic mechanism to yield text. Output: An Anthology of Computer-Generated Text, 1953–2023 (MIT Press & Counterpath, 2024), edited with Lillian-Yvonne Bertram, presents a rich and varied history of machines making language; while All the Way for the Win (Penteract Press, 2025) thematizes generation itself, from the birth of the universe to the last human poetic text, in a book of poems consisting only of three letter words.
The Code at Lang Colloquium (CaLC) is an event series putting scholars, artists, and other practitioners in conversation with New School faculty to examine what it means to do critical computer science within the arts, humanities, and social sciences.
