The headlines are full of jargon: net-zero, carbon neutral, energy transition, RSG. What does it all mean, and are we making progress? The right answers to the wrong questions will get us nowhere in our race to save our planet, and often the headlines are vague and filled with words that make us think smart people are making real progress to solve serious problems. But in many ways, we aren’t making the progress that we need. Solving net-zero math equations to make them balance won’t save the planet — we have to actually reduce emissions. Calling something “responsibly sourced” doesn’t mean it really is.
Join us for a conversation with New School alum Tri Vo, MFA Industrial Design '20, and Founder and President of CarbonBetter and Nicole Sullivan, Climate Services Manager at CarbonBetter— leaders in energy and sustainability who will share their insider perspectives on the words and concepts that may not be moving us forward.
This event is presented by the Office of Alumni Engagement in partnership with CarbonBetter as part of Earth Month. A version of this session was originally presented at SXSW.

Tri is the founder and president of CarbonBetter. His career in energy spans over 10 years, where he worked his way up from entry-level analyst to later founding Energy 95, the precursor to CarbonBetter. During his career Tri has led teams trading natural gas, power, natural gas liquids, crude oil, renewable energy credits, and carbon credits.
Tri has repeatedly witnessed the devastating effects of climate change as he guided his energy business through the complicated logistics created by climate aberrations like polar vortexes and record-setting warm winters. These experiences have fueled his passion for helping companies navigate their own transition to net-zero before it’s too late.
Tri holds a MFA in Industrial Design from The New School’s Parsons School of Design, and a BBA, Finance from the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin.
A native Texan, Tri enjoys all things that involve taking it easy – naps, whiskey, and the slow pace of making ceramics.
