The New School's Creative Writing Program curates a series of forums and special events throughout the academic year, featuring new and established writers. The forums in Poetry, Fiction, Nonfiction, and Writing for Children & YA, explore work from a writerly perspective, featuring a reading, a moderated discussion, and a Q&A with the audience. The program also hosts a variety of literary events in partnership with organizations like The National Book Foundation, the National Book Critics Circle, Cave Canem, and Kundiman.

The National Book Critics Circle honors outstanding writing and fosters a national conversation about reading, criticism, and literature. The organization was founded in April 1974 at the Algonquin Hotel in New York City, by John Leonard, Nona Balakian, and Ivan Sandrof, among others. The NBCC gained 501(c)(3) status in October 2006 and has since received grants from the NEA and Amazon Literary Partnerships to support its work. Today the NBCC serves nearly 800 member critics, authors, student members, and friends. Its Emerging Critics fellowship offers mentorship and education to a class of about a dozen aspiring critics each year.
Members of the NBCC receive access to a membership directory for finding and communicating with other critics, a continuously updated guide to publications that publish reviews, the ability to nominate titles for our annual awards and elect board members, and a variety of discounts on literary magazines. Members' reviews and career notes are published weekly in our Critical Notes newsletter.
Sustaining members, both voting and nonvoting, subscribe to a program of annual giving to support our work.
The New School offered the first academic creative writing workshop in 1931 and pioneered a new philosophy of education. The idea: students would make their own lives and their own stories part of their education. Today, The New School continues to celebrate and cultivate daring and diverse new voices through its Creative Writing program. The value of this approach is reflected in the publications and achievements of our MFA Creative Writing graduates and faculty.
