Valerie Olson will present a lecture on the extraterrestrial as a space in forward-facing research design, imagination, politics, and ethics. This is the second lecture in the Transceiver series by New School Policy and Design for Outer Space.
Dr. Olson is associate professor of anthropology at the University of California, Irvine. Olson’s “Into the Extreme” is the first book-length, in-depth ethnography of U.S. human spaceflight, and explores the questions of “how systems are socioculturally configured as situated things.” Further more: “How do disparate things become technically associated as “systems”—and to what ends? How has the extreme otherness of outer-space played a role in conjoining “systems” and “environments” across spatial scopes and scales?”
These questions residing in our constructions of environments in outer space, via the International Space Station and other cosmic ecosystems, shed new light on the political ecologies and economies wrapped up in our national projections of power into the cosmos.
This lecture is open to all interested.
Presented by the Program for Liberal Studies at The New School for Social Research.
