A Long-Term Commitment to Place: Design for Social Innovation in North East England

This year we will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the MS SDM Program. To recognize a decade of building the field of Strategic Design and Management through educating the most talented design strategists from around the world, we will be organizing the MS SDM 10th Anniversary Monthly Seminar Series. The November seminar will feature a talk by Sebastian Prost, Innovation Fellow in Design and Co-Creation at the Centre for Digital Citizens at Northumbria University’s School of Design with an introduction by Dr. Mariana Amatullo, Associate Professor of Strategic Design and Management.

In this talk, Sebastian Prost will offer reflections on over five years of design for social innovation projects in a low-income social housing estate in North East England, UK. Across the projects, the talk will highlight a number of tensions related to design for social innovation: How digital technology enables and disables humans to re-connect with each other and with nature; to what extent both participatory design and charitable organizations can only focus on supporting individuals to “get on” but fail to address systemic issues; the (in)ability of design methods to adapt to cultural contexts; and capacity building and dependency in long-term relationships between academic institutions and communities.

This event is part of the MS SDM 10 Year Anniversary Seminar Series.

Presented by MS Strategic Design & Management at Parsons School of Design.

Health & Safety Information

Event guests and visitors must provide proof of up-to-date vaccination, including a booster when eligible; a negative result from a PCR test taken within three days before arrival; or a negative result from a rapid test taken the same day. The following protocols will be in place to ensure a safe and healthy experience for everyone:

Masks must be worn in concert and lecture venues where events are held. Masks are encouraged and optional elsewhere indoors.

The New School has partnered with CLEAR to utilize Health Pass, an online tool that safely and simply verifies proof of COVID-19 vaccination. For detailed instructions on downloading and using CLEAR, visit the “Campus Visitors” section on our Access to Campus page. Specific questions about using the CLEAR Health Pass to attend an on-campus event can be directed to the event organizer.

To ensure expedited event check-in, event guests should set up a CLEAR Health Pass account with proof of vaccination prior to the event.
