Curated by Donald Wagner, a member of the College of Performing Arts Board of Governors of The New School, this concert will feature the original works of Carl Czerny, student of Beethoven and Liszt’s only piano teacher, whose significance as a composer and pedagogue is poorly understood even today. Though most famous for his piano exercises, Czerny was also a composer of great depth and creativity. In addition, we will hear original works and transcriptions by several of Czerny’s most prominent students - and their students- to demonstrate his far-reaching influence on the development of the piano literature.
The music will be performed by the extraordinary young artists of Mannes School of Music. Mr. Wagner will also offer commentary in between the pieces, providing color and context on the composers and their music.
