The Creative Publishing and Critical Journalism Student Association presents a panel discussion on paths forward in the publishing industry.
Students studying journalism, design, and publishing are encouraged to examine the existing publishing industry through the lens of possibility. We are participants in and preparing to enter an increasingly precarious industry that is equal parts hostile to and obsessed with new ideas and innovations. In this ever-changing media landscape that is shaped by publishing mergers, layoffs, digital interventions and legacy media gatekeeping, prospective writers and designers are always in danger of the industry closing another door on them. This can stymie efforts to imagine a path forward.
With this in mind, the CPCJ Student Association is hosting an evening panel discussion about the future of media between members of burgeoning independent media outlets and related thinkers in the field. Our goal is to highlight professionals who are challenging the publishing industry and demonstrating new approaches to how it is run and consumed.
Panelists include Andrew Hsiao (Verso Books), David Carroll (Parsons School of Design), Flynn Murray (Lux Magazine), Max Rivlin-Nadler (Hell Gate) and Snigdha Sur (The Juggernaut).
Presented by Creative Publishing and Critical Journalism Student Association at The New School for Social Research.
David Carroll is known internationally for legally challenging the notorious political data consultancy, Cambridge Analytica, in the UK for data privacy violations in connection with the US presidential election of 2016. His efforts demonstrating how data rights can shield democracies from mass data abuse is chronicled in The Great Hack (2019) on Netflix.Â
Flynn Murray is the publisher of Lux, and is a labor and reproductive justice activist in New York City. She is a regular contributor to activist conferences and forums. Her work has appeared in Dissent, Jacobin, and elsewhere. Flynn specializes in business management for non-profit publications, and was formerly the publishing director for Dissent magazine, where she now serves on the board.
