In this immersive gathering as part of the Charlie Parker Jazz Festival, musician, composer and educator Jerome Jennings will guide attendees through a communal exploration of recorded music - with a focus on the indelible offerings of the legendary percussionist and composer Max Roach - in celebration of the Max Roach centennial this year.Â
The evening will begin with a live Max Roach Tribute performance by the Chi Westfelt Quintet at 7pm, followed by the listening session.
Max Roach was the preeminent drummer of the bebop era and was one of the leading musicians, composers, and bandleaders in jazz from the 1940s onward. His often biting political commentary and vigorous intellect, not to mention his rhythmic innovations, kept him at the vanguard of jazz for more than 50 years.Â
Jerome Jennings is a drummer, activist, bandleader and Emmy Award-winning composer. His debut recording ‘The Beast’ is a reflection of the everyday joys and traumas of black life in the U.S. It was named one of the top three Jazz releases by NPR, received a four-star rating in Downbeat Magazine, and was nominated for the prestigious French ‘Grand Prix du Disque’ award for Album of the Year in 2016. Jerome’s sophomore recording, ‘Solidarity’, released November 2019, was recognized by NPR as best music that spoke truth to power of 2019.Â
Jerome Jennings passionately conducts concerts, clinics, lectures and presents interactive performances and interactive lessons for students.
Some of Jerome’s topics include but are not limited to:
