Since its premiere performance in 1791, Mozart's DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE (THE MAGIC FLUTE) has been wildly popular with audiences worldwide. Within a strange, joyous tale of monsters, heroes, and adventure, Mozart crafted music of incredible depth, range, and emotion, giving us a sparkling meditation on humanity.
Mannes Opera's new production takes the idea of a universal fairytale, twists it through a modern lens, and creates a lush, liminal space of myth and mystery to bring life to the mercurial nature of the story. The music, conducted by rising star Tong Chen, captures the tale's lightness and darkness with soaring arias, intricate duets, and rousing choruses to delight and thrill an audience.
The young singers of Mannes Opera infuse the production with their fresh energy and exceptional vocal abilities, bringing new life to beloved characters. With its rollicking blend of music, drama, and fantasy, Mannes Opera's production of DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE promises to be a vibrant experience for opera lovers and newcomers alike.

Under the leadership of Managing Artistic Director Emma Griffin, the Mannes Opera is a training program with a curiosity for the new and a devotion to craft for operatic artists. As part of the College of Performing Arts, the program uses the medium of opera to innovate, improvise, and create, and offers young artists extensive performance practice and opportunities.
The program engages with the rich tradition of classical repertoire as a lens with which to better understand today’s world and trains students to be professional artists with agency and control over what they do and how they do it. Mannes Opera draws on the best opera and theater makers that NYC has to offer.
Presented by the College of Performing Arts at The New School.
Committed to amplifying diverse voices, The New School offers more than a thousand public programs and events each year, providing fresh perspectives and unique learning opportunities.
