Programming:
Opening Night: The JACK Quartet
Tuesday, 8 April from 7:30-9:30pm in Stiefel Hall
Join us for the opening night performance of the Chamber Music Festival, which will be performed by the JACK Quartet, the quartet-in-residence at Mannes. This is the first time that the Chamber Music Festival will be featuring a non-student, guest ensemble, and we are honored to have JACK’s spring performance at the school be our opening night concert. (NOTE: this concert will begin at 7:30pm, instead of the normal 7pm time!)
Early Modernism: 1903-1935
Wednesday, 9 April from 7-9:30pm in Stiefel Hall
Join us for our first night of student performances in the festival, which will focus on the beginning stages of modernism within classical music. The night will feature well-known classics as well as some rare masterpieces, stemming from Europe and the United States.
The Inaugural Chamber Music Masterclass: John Pickford Richards
Thursday, 10 April from 2-4pm in the Baisley Powell Elebash Recital Hall (Room 750)
Another new feature of this semester’s festival is the introduction of the first-ever chamber music masterclass, which will be taught by our own John Pickford Richards, the violist of the JACK Quartet. Prof. Richards will share his years of experience with the students, and this will be the very first opportunity for the public to see students from Mannes be coached on their chamber music repertoire!
The Music of Our Peers: A Night Dedicated to Living Composers
Thursday, 10 April from 7-9:30pm in Stiefel Hall
Join us for our second night of student performances, in which we will hear music written by well-known living composers, music written and coached by our esteemed composition faculty member Lowell Liebermann and even music written by our own students! This night will be a special treat, in which we will be hearing music written as far back as 1969 to music written in just the last few weeks!
Piano Extravaganza: A Night of Keyboard-Only Ensembles
Friday, 11 April from 7-10pm in Stiefel Hall
Coming back by popular demand: a fun-filled night of keyboard-only student ensembles! Featuring music for 1-piano/4-hands, 1-piano/6-hands, and 2 pianos, and spanning from Schubert and Beethoven through Gershwin and Piazzolla, this will surely be a night to remember.
Europe in the 1800s: From Schumann through Debussy
Sunday, 13 April from 2-4:30pm in Stiefel Hall
Join us for the fourth student concert of the Chamber Music Festival Concert Series, as we cross through the entire range of the Romantic period. Featuring duos, trios, and quartets by some of the greatest composers of the latter half of the Common Practice Period, this afternoon concert will be a delight!
The Second Half of the 20th-Century: Music from 1951-1999
Sunday, 13 April from 7-9:30pm in Stiefel Hall
Join us for our fifth student concert as we explore music specifically written within the second half of the 1900s. Featuring some of the most technically-challenging repertoire of the modern era, to transcriptions of works by pop groups such as ABBA, a performance such as this has never happened before within Mannes.
German and Austrian Music of the Pre-Romantic Era
Monday, 14 April from 7-9:30pm in Stiefel Hall
Join us for our final student showcase of this semester’s Chamber Music Festival, in which we will be exploring the music of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert! From piano duos through string quartets and quintets, this night will explore a wide array of music from some of our most cherished early composers.
Grand Finale: Orange Road Quartet
Tuesday, 15 April from 7-9pm in Stiefel Hall
In our grand finale of this semester’s Chamber Music Festival, we will be featuring our second-ever guest ensemble: the Orange Road Quartet, which is the Cuker and Stern Graduate String Quartet at Mannes. We are so thrilled that we are able to feature two guest ensembles in this semester’s Chamber Music Festival, and this night will be a truly amazing opportunity to witness some of the most innovative new chamber artists in the country performing some of the newest additions to their quartet’s repertoire. This performance will feature a world premiere by Theodore Haber, as well as music by John Luther Adams, inti figgis-vizueta, and Iannis Xenakis. Please join us for the wonderful final performance of this season's festival series, a true celebration of chamber music as a whole, and of the Mannes Chamber Music Festival!
