Kenneth Frampton is an architect, critic, historian, and previously Ware Professor of Architecture at the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University (1972-2021). His most important works include Modern Architecture: A Critical History (Thames & Hudson, 1980; 5th edition 2020), Studies in Tectonic Culture: The Poetics of Construction in Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Architecture (MIT Press, 1995), and The Other Modern Movement (Yale University Press,2021).
Frampton will reflect on the historical and theoretical entanglements of architecture with place, the public realm, cultural identity, urban landscape and the environment, as well as on the question of “predicament” of architecture in the neo-liberal, capitalist world since the 1980s and well into the new Millennium.
Health & Safety Information
Event guests and visitors must provide proof of up-to-date vaccination, including a booster when eligible. The following protocols will be in place to ensure a safe and healthy experience for everyone:
Masks must be worn in concert and lecture venues where events are held. Masks are encouraged and optional elsewhere indoors.
The New School has partnered with CLEAR to utilize Health Pass, an online tool that safely and simply verifies proof of COVID-19 vaccination. For detailed instructions on downloading and using CLEAR, visit the “Events and Gatherings” section on our Access to Campus page. Specific questions about using the CLEAR Health Pass to attend an on-campus event can be directed to the event organizer.
To ensure expedited event check-in, event guests should set up a CLEAR Health Pass account with proof of vaccination prior to the event.
For those of you that are not able to join us in person, a livestream link will be sent out in advance of the event, so please register and we will share it with you.

Kenneth B. Frampton (born 1930) is one of the most widely published and
cited, critically acclaimed, and awarded architectural theorists,
historians, critics, and educators. Frampton practiced as a professional
architect in the United Kingdom, Israel, and the United States. His most
notable buildings include the Corringham Building (1960–1962) in
Bayswater, London, designed while he worked with Douglas Stephen and
Partners; and the Marcus Garvey Village built in Brooklyn, New York
(1973–1976), a highly acclaimed design (in collaboration with Arthur
Baker, Anthony Pangaro, and Michael Kirkland) seen at that time as a
model for low-rise, high-density urban housing in the United States.
Frampton is a founding editor of Oppositions (1973-1984) and the author
of several hundred essays, seminars and lectures, with critical writings
spanning almost 60 years. He is also the author of over twenty books,
many in multiple editions and translated into several languages. They
include the seminal Modern Architecture: A Critical History (Thames and
Hudson, 1980), “Towards a Critical Regionalism: Six Points for an
Architecture of Resistance” (1983), Studies in Tectonic Culture: The
Poetics of Construction in Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Architecture
(MIT Press, 1995), and The Other Modern Movement: Architecture,
1920–1970 (Yale University Press, 2022).
Awarded, highly admired, and treasured as an educator, Frampton taught
at Princeton University from 1966 to 1972, and at Columbia University
from 1972 until his retirement in 2020. He also held visiting
professorships in over thirty schools of architecture across the world,
including the Royal College of Art in London, United Kingdom; the
Berlage Institute in Amsterdam/Rotterdam, the Netherlands; and École
Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Accademia di Architettura di
Mendrisio (AAM), and the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH)
Zürich, in Switzerland.
Amongst other distinguished honors, Frampton was presented with a
Lifetime Achievement Award by the Society of Architectural Historians in
2018, and the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement of the 16th
International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia in 2018.
