The JACK Studio Festival is a daylong celebration of artists from JACK Quartet’s Studio program, which offers composers opportunities to develop new work, hear their music performed by JACK, consult with mentors in the field, and receive recorded documentation. JACK performs two sets: at 4:00 pm, they premiere projects by Michele Cheng and X. Lee, and at 7pm they premiere works by Amy Brandon, Joy Guidry, and Njabulo Phungula. The Kodak Quartet and Bergamot Quartet pair past JACK Studio projects by Sarah Grace Graves and Khyam Allami with their current repertoire, performing sets at 5pm (Kodak) and 6pm (Bergamot). Both Kodak and Bergamot have studied with JACK as Cuker and Stern Graduate String Quartets at Mannes School of Music, where JACK is the string quartet in residence.
All performances are free and open to the public.
Presented by the College of Performing Arts at The New School.

JACK Studio was founded in 2019 to support commissions, recording projects, and workshops with emerging artists from across the globe. JACK has long observed the transformative impact that schools and festivals can have for composers, strengthening their portfolios and advancing them to new artistic, educational, and professional opportunities. However, the social, cultural, and economic realities of institutional access disproportionately and unfairly exclude many people. We address this inequity by inviting artists to apply for JACK Studio, offering them paid opportunities to develop new work, hear their music performed by JACK, consult with mentors in the field, and receive recorded documentation. More than 40 composers have worked with JACK through Studio thus far, hailing from Argentina, Belarus, Canada, Germany, Malaysia, Mexico, Myanmar, South Africa, Syria and. Studio artists’ projects have been performed by JACK at venues including TIME:SPANS, Merkin Hall, the Lucerne Festival, Central Park, MoMA PS1, and Mannes School of Music, in addition to being recorded for professional releases.
JACK Studio is made possible with generous support from the Adele and John Gray Endowment Fund, Anthony B. Creamer III, Lars Hanson, Gérard Pape, Peter Pohly, Peter Robles, Rita Schaefer (in memory of Michael Schaefer), Elena Siyanko, Rand Steiger, Sarah West, John White, and an Avery Fisher Career Grant. JACK is also deeply grateful for our institutional partners, who make this program possible through general operating support.
Committed to amplifying diverse voices, The New School offers more than a thousand public programs and events each year, providing fresh perspectives and unique learning opportunities.
