JACK Quartet~World Premieres by Zara Ali, Seare Farhat, Rishin Singh

World premieres by Zara Ali, Seare Farhat, and Rishin Singh. All pieces are commissioned by JACK Studio

JACK Quartet celebrates four new JACK Studio projects in a free recital on December 15, 2023. This concert is held in partnership with Mannes School of Music at the The New School in New York City, where JACK is the quartet-in-residence.

The recital will showcase premieres by JACK Studio composers Zara Ali, Seare Farhat, and Rishin Singh. It also features a screening of "Lost & Founds," a film by Iván Decoud, commissioned and performed by JACK Quartet through the JACK Studio program.

Each of these artists has worked with JACK for a two-year residency, during which they received opportunities to develop new work, hear their music performed by JACK Quartet, and receive mentorship from performers in their field.

Program:

New Work, Zara Ali
"melancholy objects," Rishin Singh
"Lost & Founds," a film by Iván Decoud
New Work, Seare Farhat

All works were commissioned by JACK Quartet through the JACK Studio program

About JACK Studio:

JACK Studio was founded in 2019 to support commissions, recording projects, and workshops with emerging artists from across the globe.

JACK has long observed the transformative impact that schools and festivals can have for composers, strengthening their portfolios and advancing them to new artistic, educational, and professional opportunities. However, the social, cultural, and economic realities of institutional access disproportionately and unfairly exclude many people. We address this inequity by inviting artists to apply for JACK Studio, offering them paid opportunities to develop new work, hear their music performed by JACK, consult with mentors in the field, and receive recorded documentation.

For more information, visit JACK Studio.

About JACK Quartet:

Hailed by The New York Times as “our leading new-music foursome,” JACK Quartet is synchronized in its mission to create an international community through transformative, mind-broadening experiences and close listening. Comprising violinists Christopher Otto and Austin Wulliman, violist John Pickford Richards, and cellist Jay Campbell, JACK was founded in 2005 and operates as a nonprofit organization dedicated to the performance, commissioning, and appreciation of 20th and 21st century string quartet music.

JACK has a prolific commissioning and recording catalog and has been nominated for three GRAMMY Awards. This season, the quartet is featured in the ongoing celebrations of John Zorn’s 70th birthday, a three-concert day at Wigmore Hall, a premiere by Natacha Diels in Philadelphia, an Australian tour, and the fifth edition of JACK Studio. JACK’s all-access initiative JACK Studio funds collaborations with a selection of artists each year to develop new works for string quartet. Through its successful nonprofit model, the quartet has created hundreds of new works, and the world’s top composers choose JACK because of its dedication to innovation.

JACK’s albums of music by John Luther Adams were nominated for GRAMMY Awards in both 2022 and 2023. Previous albums include music by Helmut Lachenmann, Catherine Lamb, Du Yun, Elliott Sharp, Zosha di Castri, and Iannis Xenakis.

The JACK Quartet makes its home in NYC, where it is the Quartet in Residence at the Mannes School of Music. All four members are alumni of the Lucerne Festival Academy.
