Description

Indigenous territories and peoples constitute most of the biological and cultural diversity globally. The reaffirmation, restitution, and defense of their lands and autonomy are essential to reclaiming Indigenous identity, dignity, and sovereignty in the face of modern Eurocentric colonial domination and the extractivism of the State and capital that destroy the peoples and Mother Earth. In the same way, reclaiming Indigenous territories and autonomies constitutes a real and historically-verified solution to environmental and climate crises. These are decolonial and anti-extractivist alternatives to the false, technocratic, and capitalist solutions advanced by the 'green economy' and 'sustainable development'. In this panel, we address the paths of Indigenous autonomous governments and Indigenous guards, (re)emerging in Abya Yala and Turtle Island as liberatory frameworks in the context of the continuity of the historical anti-colonial struggle, and as communal, strategic, and sustainable horizons which defend the land and territory in the face of all the modes of extractivist, capitalist and state violence. Indigenous autonomies are presented not as essentialist reconstructions of an idealized pre-colonial world; instead, they claim, reaffirm, reimagine and regenerate in a decolonizing register a long and living tradition of resistance, sovereignty, creativity, and Indigenous knowledge that constitutes, through the cosmovison and collective practices of the peoples/nations, strategic and indispensable horizons in the face of the crises and violence of the Eurocentric and modern-colonial world order. Furthermore, as Indigenous autonomous governments strengthen and articulate among them, their interwoven autonomies and their defense constitute and prefigure the organizational bases of an emerging self-governed territorial fabric that prefigures sustainable horizons and futures beyond the extractivist and colonial order that has brought us the present systemic crisis.
