2022-2024 Jane Lombard Fellow Colectivo Cherani is a collective and artistic initiative from Michoacán, Mexico. The collective emerged first as a political movement following the P’urhepecha community uprising in 2011 to counter deforestation and violent threats posed by illegal logging and organized crime, backed by political corruption. Led by women, the uprising kicked out the logging cartel and established their autonomy, legally recognized by the Constitution of Mexico, and have since maintained a traditional self-governing structure to collectively enforce and protect P’urhepecha territory and people. As a part of this mobilization and political restructuring, Colectivo Cherani shaped a cultural movement to energize and maintain the artistic expression of the P’urhepecha , and especially recuperating and activating at risk Indigenous traditions. Through a range of artistic approaches, from murals to film, artisanal crafts and painting, Colectivo Cherani kindles spaces and moments of collective resistance.
Colectivo Cherani members Betel Cucué, Giovanni Fabian, Alain Silva Guardian, and prize nominator, curator, art writer, and cultural theorist Pablo José Ramírez discuss the collective, P’urhepecha resistance movements, and experiments in autonomy and self-governance. 2022-2024 Jane Lombard Fellow Colectivo Cherani es una iniciativa colectiva y artística de Michoacán, México. El colectivo comenzó primero como un movimiento político en respuesta al levantamiento de la comunidad purépecha en 2011 contra la deforestación y las amenazas violentas planteadas por el talamonte ilegal y el crimen organizado, que fue apoyado por la corrupción política. Dirigido por mujeres, el alzamiento expulsó al cártel maderero y estableció su autonomía, legalmente reconocida por la Constitución de México, y desde entonces ha mantenido una estructura de autogobierno para hacer cumplir y proteger colectivamente el territorio y el pueblo purépecha. Como parte de esta movilización y reestructuración política, el Colectivo Cherani dio forma a un movimiento cultural para dinamizar y mantener la expresión artística de los purépechas, y especialmente recuperar y activar las tradiciones indígenas en riesgo. A través de una variedad de enfoques artísticos, desde murales hasta videos, artesanía y pintura, Colectivo Cherani despierta espacios y momentos de resistencia colectiva.

Bethel Cucué (1990) is a visual artist, muralist and cantoya artisan, originally from the community of Cherán, Michoacán, Mexico. Her artistic practice focuses mainly on easel painting and large-format painting. Her work is influenced by the social and cultural environment of her community, and her work is inspired by customs, dances, parties, rituals, and everyday life; and in turn, she creates scenes and characters that are nourished from the language and aesthetics of the Purépecha region. Her interest stems mainly from a community environment of inclusion of native peoples in the arts, and works to make artistic activities more inclusive to children, young people and women through different creative workshops. Her most recent collective exhibitions include Coyolxauhqui Banco de México Museum, Mexico City; Uinapikua Cherani Collective, MUAC, Mexico City; and Proyecto Koala, Embassy of Australia Mexico City.
Bethel Cucué (1990) Artista visual, muralista y artesana de globos de cantoya, originaria de la comunidad de Cherán, Michoacán, México. Su trabajo plástico se centra principalmente en la pintura de caballete y de gran formato. Su obra obtiene influencia por el entorno social y cultural de su comunidad y trabaja conceptos tales como usos y costumbres, danzas, fiestas, rituales, o la cotidianidad del día a día; a su vez construye sus propios escenarios y personajes nutridos siempre desde el lenguaje y la estética de la región Purépecha. Su interés parte principalmente desde un ambiente comunitario de inclusión de los pueblos originarios en las artes. Intenta incluir a más niños, niñas, jóvenes y mujeres en el quehacer de las actividades artísticas; es por ello que promueve distintos talleres creativos y actividades de los cuales puedan ser partícipes, siempre de la idea de identidad. Sus exposiciones más recientes colectivas como Coyolxauhqui, Museo Banco de México, Ciudad de México; y Proyecto Koala, embajada de Australia en Ciudad de México.
Colectivo Cherani are a group of artists from Cherán K'eri that include Ariel Pañeda Francisco Huaroco, Bethel Cucué, Alain Silva and Giovanni Fabian. Their work emanates from deep roots in the Purhépecha culture. In 2011, the community fought in defense of its territory, and since then their work has revolutionized techniques and learned processes from the Western tradition that coexist, are enriched and are transformed with Indigenous knowledge to manifest a stand before a contemporary reality. Through visual arts, they have managed to revitalize memory from intimate daily life in community spaces as open interlocutors.

Colectivo Cherani son artistas originarios de Cherán K’eri, integrado por Ariel Pañeda, Francisco Huaroco, Bethel Cucué, Alain Silva y Giovanni Fabian. Emana de las profundas raíces de la cultura purhépecha. En el año 2011, la comunidad luchó en defensa de su territorio, a partir de entonces su trabajo revolucionó, las técnicas y procesos aprendidos de la tradición occidental que conviven, se enriquecen y transforman junto con los saberes originarios para manifestar una postura ante la realidad contemporánea. Por medio de la proyección plástica han logrado revitalizar la memoria desde la cotidianidad íntima en los espacios comunitarios y se sitúan como interlocutores siempre abiertos.

He has also collaborated on the mural intervention in public spaces in communities and cities throughout Mexico. He has been included in group exhibitions such as SEVEN4FIFTEEN at Exploring Visual Cultures; II Biennial of Contemporary Art BARCO; Mariposas Migrantes, Casa Michoacana, West Chicago; Entre la ficción y la realidad, Calzada and 8, Havana Cuba. He has participated in programs such as Constellations Indigenous Contemporary Art from the Americas: Geopoetics, TATE London UK; The XIV FEMSA BIENAL pedagogical program; and Graphic Exchange/Graphic Exchange, Australia.

La representación de las tradiciones, recogen elementos simbólicos de la cotidianidad P'urépecha para hacerlas indispensables de su obra, el video e instalación son medios con los cuales busca a través de ellos múltiples intereses conceptuales como estéticos. La Intervención Mural en espacios públicos en comunidades y ciudades de la república mexicana. Su trabajo ha trascendido a diferentes países, exposiciones colectivas como SEVEN4FIFTEEN, Exploring Visual Cultures; II Bienal de Arte Contemporáneo BARCO; Mariposas Migrantes, Casa Michoacana, West Chicago; Entre la ficción y la realidad, Calzada y 8, Habana Cuba. Giovanni Fabián Guerrero (1993) Artista Purépecha, su trabajo visual emerge de la memoria colectiva de su comunidad de origen Cherán. Sus pinturas en gran formato son un espacio ritual donde cada uno de sus personajes se encuentra en una alteridad. Sus instalaciones y esculturas emergen de un espacio territorial en un imaginario simbólico, creando así una narrativa contemporánea desde una reflexión crítica a la modernidad. Francisco Huaroco Rosas (1977) is an artist from Cherán, Michoacán. Huaroco graduated from the Popular Faculty of Fine Arts of the U.M.S.N.H in Morelia, Michoacán. He has participated in festivals such as ENTIJUANARTE in Tijuana, Baja California; FIRE FESTIVAL 1RA. EDITION (2017) in Chambery in France 2017; ANIMECHERI KEJSITAKUA (2018) at Buena Park California, USA; and ONDALINDA in Careyes, Jalisco, in 2017, 2018 and 2019, In 2020, he was a commissioning curator at the XIV Femsa Biennial in Michoacán and organized Juchári K'eri K'uínchekua - Nuestro espacio de encuentro.
