Join us for the September session of the Reimagining the Economics of Aging Seminar Series, a monthly virtual forum hosted by the Wealth Equity Lab at The New School.

This series brings together scholars and practitioners to deepen conversations on aging, retirement, and late-life economic security, with a focus on works in progress and active discussion.

Our September 2nd virtual seminar will be led by Dr. Manuel Sá Valente, Assistant Researcher in Ethics and Political Philosophy at the Centre for Ethics, Politics, and Society (CEPS) and the Department of Philosophy at the University of Minho, who will discuss his work "If you are a liberal egalitarian, how come you invest so much in late life?" 

To what extent is devoting large shares of public resources to late life, particularly through old-age pensions, compatible with the liberal egalitarian principles that so many modern states uphold? Much less than is often assumed. Perhaps surprisingly, there are both liberal and egalitarian arguments favoring a shift in resources, including pension spending, toward earlier stages of life. While good reasons remain for protecting people later in life under real-world conditions, beyond a threshold, those reasons do not justify a welfare state generally oriented toward the elderly.
