ONLINE | The Human Impact of Climate Change: Mental Health, Mobility and Our Changing Planet

The term “climate refugee” emerged to describe the entirety of issues connected to climate-related migration. The United Nations and other international organizations, however, have not agreed upon an official definition of the term. As a result, climate refugees do not fit into any legal definitions of a refugee and are not entitled to the same resources and protections granted to refugees by international and local law.

Each year since 2008, an average of more than 20 million people are forced to move because of weather-related events, such as floods, storms, wildfires or extreme temperature. Many others are leaving their homes because of slower moving events, such as droughts or coastal erosion. According to the World Bank, climate change could force more than 143 million people in three regions (Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, and Southeast Asia) to move within their countries by 2050 and create a swell of internal migrants. Without an officially agreed-upon definition, climate-related displaced migrants will continue to be under-researched, under-resourced, and under-represented in the growing global climate change-related migration and displacement crisis.

In addition to being undefined and unrecognized by international and local laws, climate-related migrants face adverse effects to their mental health by compounded stressors related to socioeconomic vulnerabilities due to increased competition for food and water, undermined livelihood related to loss of home and land, disrupted social networks and loose social cohesion, and severed economic pipelines. Those affected may be marginalized depending on the local or international context of their destination and isolated due to their undefined legal status. With growing attention to the mental health impacts of climate change, it is important to come together to learn about the current goals and findings of the research and provide an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the mental health impacts on those affected by the climate crisis.

As part of a larger series of discussions on mental health and forced migration sponsored by the Social Science Research Council’s Borderlands Initiative, and in partnership with the Consortium on Forced Migration, Displacement, and Education and the University Alliance for Refugees and At-Risk Migrants, we are inviting thought leaders from interdisciplinary backgrounds and diverse contexts to shed light on the impact of climate change on mental health and explore the ways in which this is being conceptualized, represented, documented, studied, and mitigated.

Registered attendees will receive the Zoom link via email.

Hosted by the Trauma and Global Mental Health Lab in the Psychology Department at The New School for Social Research; The Consortium on Forced Migration, Displacement and Education at Vassar College; The University Alliance for Refugees and At-Risk Migrants at Rutgers University; and Bennington College.

By joining this online event, you will be prompted to accept Zoom Terms of Service. If the session is recorded, you acknowledge that by participating, your name, phone number, and profile picture might be visible to the public. You can customize your personal information when creating your Zoom account. The New School may use any recorded material from the event.
