The Institute for Critical Social Inquiry will open part of its programming to the public – a series of lectures taught by this Summer's faculty cohort of David Harvey (CUNY), Susan Buck-Morss (CUNY), and Fred Moten (NYU).
This event was originally scheduled for Wednesday, June 19th, but will now take place on Thursday, June 20th at 5:00PM.
Fred Moten's lecture is entitled "'Incalculable Rhythm': The Poetics of W.E.B. Du Bois’s 'Sociology Hesitant'":
This lecture will consider – not against but still outside of the statistical limits of a certain historico-geographical determination of the modernist “poetics of indeterminacy” – what Du Bois offers for a possible reading of and for the depths of the entanglement of blackness and poetry. This will give us a chance to listen to Amiri Baraka, Duke Ellington, William Shakespeare and Wallace Stevens. Fun may well be had by all!
Fred Moten works in the Departments of Performance Studies and Comparative Literature at New York University. He is concerned with social movement, aesthetic experiment, and black study and has written several books that address these concerns. His latest projects include a poetry collection, Perennial Fashion Presence Falling (Wave Books, 2023), a record album, Fred Moten/Brandon López/Gerald Cleaver (Reading Group Records, 2022), a performance in filmmaker Wu Tsang’s Moby Dick; or, The Whale (2022), and an essay collection, All Incomplete (Minor Compositions, 2021), co-authored with his long time co-worker Stefano Harney.

About the Institute:
The Institute for Critical Social Inquiry (ICSI) is designed to provide advanced graduate students and junior faculty from around the world with the opportunity to spend one week at the New School’s campus in Greenwich Village working closely with some of the most distinguished thinkers shaping the course of contemporary social inquiry. Each of these scholars will teach a week-long seminar on a foundational thinker or topic of contemporary concern in a series of hands-on, intensive, and intimate sessions.
