Arturo O'Farrill and The Afro Latin Jazz Octet
The Conga Patria Son Jarocho Collective
The New School Studio Orchestra
Featuring live music and dance from the Grammy-winning album with The New School’s Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Octet, The Conga Patria Son Jarocho Collective and The New School Studio Orchestra.
Fandango at the Wall—a story of breaking down barriers—offers a powerful and timely gathering. Originally released to critical acclaim with praise from DownBeat, NPR, The New York Times, and The Nation, the music resonates with even greater urgency today in our fractured political moment.
The project brings together brilliant voices from a variety of cultural and musical traditions to tear down a variety of walls that isolate us—physical, musical, or cultural. The piece was inspired by Jorge Francisco Castillo, a retired librarian who has organized the Fandango Fronterizo Festival for the past decade. The annual event gathers son jarocho musicians on both sides of the border wall between Tijuana and San Diego for a celebratory jam session. In O’Farrill’s reimagination, his esteemed Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra and Castillo’s son jarocho musicians came together at the border, joined by a more than 60 gifted musicians representing both sides of that divide.
Please join us to answer isolation with community and discord with unity, expression and joy.
