For the 12th consecutive year, forced displacement due to authoritarianism, conflict, and war around the world has increased, reaching unprecedented levels according to UN data. Scholars and students are no exception to this trend. For the many who are compelled to leave their home countries, the number of safe havens is also steadily declining. The 7th Annual New University in Exile Scholars’ Conference is centered around this theme of displacement, which our scholar members and panelists know all too well. This conference seeks to critically examine the causes and repercussions of displacement as well as its impact on freedom of expression, academic freedom, democracy, human rights, gender equity, and public health. Composed of a group of exiled intellectuals hailing from more than 30 different countries and specializing in a wide array of disciplines and professions, the New University in Exile Consortium fellows are empowered with a unique perspective to make the invisible nature of displacement visible.
Presented by the New University in Exile Consortium at the New School for Social Research with support from Humboldt University of Berlin.
