Disability, Chronic Illness, and Inclusion in Academia is a student conference examining the intersection of social justice and academia on issues of disability justice, chronic illness advocacy, accessibility, and intersectionality. The conference will bring researchers, advocates, educators, and New School community members at the student, staff, and faculty level together to address best practices and gaps at the intersections of our work.
The aim of this student conference is to amplify the voices and experiences of disabled and/or chronically ill students, staff, and faculty inside and outside the classroom; uplift new and upcoming research regarding disability justice; create spaces for connection and community within The New School; collect and share accessibility information and advocacy tools for members of The New School community (both disabled, chronically ill, and nondisabled and non-chronically-ill); and deconstruct medicalization and pathologization of chronic illness and disability within academic discourse. Ultimately, the conference hopes to ask: how can academia in general, and The New School specifically, become more accessible and inclusive for its disabled and chronically ill community members?
You can join this event by registering to attend in-person, or by registering to receive the Zoom/Livestream link. More details can be found below.
This event is presented by the New School for Social Research and the Gender and Health Lab, with support from the NSSR Dean’s Conference Fund, the University Student Senate, and the Department of Psychology at NSSR.
This event is being conducted by disabled and chronic ill NSSR students for both the TNS community and our disability and chronic ill communities. In this conference, we're committed to including all three communities in all conference events. We consider accessibility as one of the major values of inclusion and a requirement to create space for disability justice discussions.
Virtual events: Based on the existing funding and with support from TNS Student Disability Office, virtual events, which are open to the public, will include closed captioning and ASL interpretation. Each event will consist of a 5-minute break around its first 60 minutes.
Hybrid events: Based on the existing funding we have received, the hybrid events on Friday will have only closed-captioning and no ASL interpretation. Room 202 in the Theresa Lang Community and Student Center is accessible for wheelchair users, chairs are movable around the space, and accessible restrooms exist on the same floor.
Each event will consist of a 5-minute break around its first 60 minutes.
What if the above accessibility actions do not include me and my needs?: Participants who are members of TNS, participants have the right to make accessibility requests to The New School prior to the event, based on the Americans with Disabilities Act. TNS students should contact the Student Disability Services office at studentdisability@newschool.edu. TNS faculty and employees should contact TNS Human Resources. “Access is far more to me than a checklist for accessibility needs–though checklists are needed and necessary” (Piepzna-Samarasinha, L. L. on Care Work: Dreaming Disability Justice, 2018)
As organizers we recognize that access is far more than accessibility and accessibility is far more than accommodations and adjustments. If we have missed something related to access and accessibility, please feel free to contact us by clicking the "Contact the Organizer" link at the bottom of this page.
