In September 2021, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres unveiled Our Common Agenda, proposals to reinvigorate multilateral cooperation and revitalize the UN system. This fall will be a key moment for advocacy, deliberations, and negotiations on the road to the Summit of the Future, which is scheduled for September 2023.
To incorporate the perspectives of youth in this monumental work, this session brings together students from The New School and representatives from GWL Voices:
• Ms Irina Bokova, former Director-General of United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); former Minister of Foreign Affairs (ad interim), Bulgaria; Co-founder, GWL Voices.
• Ms. Ertharin Cousin, former Executive Director of the World Food Programme; former Ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture; Member, GWL Voices.
• Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa, President of the seventy-third United Nations General Assembly; former Minister of Foreign Affairs; former Minister of National Defence, Ecuador; former Chair of the Group of 77; Member and consultant, GWL Voices.
• Ms. Susana Malcorra, former Minister of Foreign Affairs & Worship (2015-2017), Argentina; former Chief of Staff of the Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, United Nations; President and co-founder, GWL Voices.
Moderator: Professor Sakiko Fukuda-Parr, Professor of International Affairs at The New School and Vice Chair of UN Committee for Development Policy.
Space is limited to 25 student participants (only current New School students and alumni permitted).
Presented by the Julien J. Studley Graduate Programs in International Affairs and GWL Voices at the Schools of Public Engagement.
The Julien J. Studley Graduate Programs in International Affairs at The New School in New York City are designed to prepare engaged, reflective global citizens who can contribute to making the world more inclusive, just, and sustainable. The most pressing contemporary challenges — from the rise of authoritarian regimes and refugee crises to youth unemployment and climate change — demand the deep understanding of complex global systems, new perspectives, real-world experience, and commitment to social justice that our programs provide.
Named among the top international affairs programs by the Foreign Policy Association, our Graduate Programs in International Affairs are distinctive in The New School tradition: critical, engaged, and truly global.
Committed to amplifying diverse voices, The New School offers more than a thousand public programs and events each year, providing fresh perspectives and unique learning opportunities. These lectures, exhibitions, concerts, and performances feature prominent and emerging artists, activists, and thought leaders.
