Design History and Practice Capstone Symposium
with Keynote Speaker Lucy Cotter
Join the students of the School of Art and Design History and Theory's BFA Design History and Practice program as they present their research and practice, followed by a keynote address from writer, curator, and cultural theorist, Lucy Cotter, author of Reclaiming Artistic Research (Hatje Cantz 2019). Cotter will speak to the newly expanded second-edition, Reclaiming Artistic Research in a World on Fire (2024).
Artistic Research in a World on Fire
What are the stakes of artistic research in a world reckoning with social justice, climate change, and the rise of artificial intelligence? What are the unique forms of knowing and unknowing specific to artmaking? How do they relate to academic knowledge? Why is there no established discourse around artistic research in the US, unlike Europe, Canada, Australia, and other locations globally? Do US art infrastructures need to shapeshift to support artistic research?
In this lecture, internationally acclaimed writer, curator, and artist Lucy Cotter will explore the relevance of artistic research as a means to expand artistic practice, contribute to social transformation, and the decolonization of knowledge. Considering these questions in relation to the work of artists today, she will draw insights from the newly released expanded edition of her book Reclaiming Artistic Research which enters into dialogue with 24 leading artists worldwide to address artistic knowledge in practice.
