This ten-week seminar integrates critical data studies, political economy, crisis mapping, digital ethnography, and governance theory, focusing on practical insights and storytelling from satellite imagery, displacement records, and humanitarian maps to teach participants how to read evidence critically: what data shows, what it obscures, and how political and economic forces shape knowledge. The core method is layering multiple sources—farmland loss alongside displacement spikes and conflict clusters—to reveal patterns no single dataset can show, while also identifying missing information on livelihoods, everyday life, and survival. This approach is essential because information warfare and social media have made single-source data unreliable. Cases from Afghanistan, Sudan, Ethiopia, and elsewhere connect these methods to democratic governance, humanitarian accountability, and the visibility of ordinary people in crisis.Â

Dr. Yilak Akloweg Kebede is an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow at Ruhr University Bochum, specializing in digital and spatial history, urbanization, and geospatial analysis. His research uses GIS, satellite imagery, and historical cartography to reconstruct spatial narratives and long-term urban transformation, including a comparative study of urban growth across five African cities and a digital platform reconnecting fragmented historical maps.
Abdul Momin Mansoor is a Visiting Research Scholar at the University of North Dakota's Institute of Policy and Business Analytics, researching economic development, energy policy, and fiscal forecasting. He brings two decades of experience in senior advisory and executive roles in Afghanistan's Ministry of Finance, Parliament, and Office of the President, focused on public finance, infrastructure investment, and institutional reform.
The New University in Exile Consortium regularly offers a series of free, 10-week, co-led online seminars. The seminars are taught by two endangered scholars – one who is hosted by a Consortium member institution, and the other a colleague of their choice. The seminars are designed to reconnect endangered scholars with the academic community they have lost while in exile and reengage students from around the world with professors they have lost. They are free and open to anyone anywhere in the world with an internet connection.
