What structures can enable the university to further its interlocking goals of research, pedagogy, community, and social justice? In this second CT/d Dialogue, engaged scholars and administrators explore the challenges of understanding and transforming our inherited infrastructures at their various scales: disciplinary histories, social and political inequities, program accreditation, shared governance, physical space, hiring practices, grading, even the bell schedule.
Participants:
Bedelia Richards, University of Richmond
K. Wayne Yang, UC San Diego
Vanessa Andreotti, University of British Columbia (on Zoom)
Melanie Hart (moderator)

Bedelia Nicola Richards, PhD is an Associate Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Richmond. As a race/ethnicity, immigration and education scholar, her research has addressed the implications of the growing diversity of the U.S. Black population with a study on the experiences of second generation West Indians in New York City schools.Â
Wayne Yang’s work transgresses the line between scholarship and community, as evidenced by his involvement in urban education and community organizing. Before his academic career, he was a public school teacher in Ohlone territory, now called Oakland, California, where he co-founded the Avenues Project, a youth development non-profit organization, as well as East Oakland Community High School, which were inspired by the Survival Programs of the Black Panther Party.
Dr. Andreotti was appointed Interim Director of the Institute in September 2021.
Dr. Andreotti is a Canada Research Chair in Race, Inequalities and Global Change, a research fellow at the University of Oulu, where she was chair of global education from 2010 to 2013, and a research fellow at the Centre for Global Citizenship Education at the University of Alberta.
As Senior Vice President for Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice and Chief Diversity Officer, Melanie Hart focuses on elevating the strategies, values and practices of equity, diversity, inclusion and social justice across The New School.
