Imagine you walk into an intentionally designed built space just down the block, that immediately and effortlessly induces dramatic changes in your brain patterns that resemble those seen in long term contemplative practitioners in meditation with the lasting mental, emotional and physiological benefits on your health and wellbeing! Recent neuroscience research has shown that our built environment has the amazing potential to profoundly impact us in this way.
In our increasingly disconnected world, why are such spaces of deeper connection and transformation so rare? Sarika Bajoria, an architectural professional and contemplative practitioner, argues that although cutting-edge “external” technologies will contribute to the shape and speed of architecture and design’s next chapter, it is just as important for the design community to cultivate “internal” technologies that, once integrated into the day-to-day design process, will drive the deeper intention, wonder, empathy, wisdom and felt senses necessary for design’s next chapter to actually be composed and written.
In this interactive presentation and workshop, Sarika will introduce the novel “Contemplative Designer” framework designed to help designers intentionally create spaces of deeper connection and wellbeing in our built world. Participants will gain insights that will assist them in achieving more agency, joy, flow and productivity in their design practices, engage in design-focused exercises to help them better understand their potential as designers, and learn tools and practices that will inspire them to create an “outer” built world that truly reflects their rich “inner” world of design.

Moved by an extraordinary architectural experience as a teenager, Sarika embarked on a quest to become an architect and create spaces of deeper connection and wellbeing in our built environment. At eighteen she ventured from the crowded streets of Calcutta to the open cornfields of Iowa to attend Luther College where, after the initial culture shock, she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Physics, Mathematics, and Art.
Inspired by the writings and buildings of Louis Kahn, Sarika moved to Philadelphia to obtain a Masters in Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania, and then on to New York City. Over the past 20 years she has practiced all phases of socially conscious design for global architecture, urban design, and interior design projects of diverse scales and programs. As the founding principal of her own practice Sarika Bajoria Unlimited and as a senior design leader collaborating with many New York City firms including Skidmore Owings & Merrill, Perkins+Will, Woods Bagot, her work has been recognized with several awards including “BD+C 40 under 40 2014” and “ENR NY Top 20 under 40 2013” and has been published in many international design publications. She also co-founded the Architecture for Humanity New York Chapter where she designed many pro-bono projects for underserved communities and led the organization as the Founding Director for many years.
In the Big Apple Sarika discovered Buddhist contemplative practice and has had the privilege of deeply studying and teaching its timeless contemplative methods and wisdom for over 14 years. “Contemplative Designer” was born from a synthesis of her professional design and contemplative practices and research into many fields created to help the design community consciously design spaces of deeper connection and wellbeing in our built environment. “Contemplative Designer” helps the design community through a learning and supportive global membership community, workshops, individual and organizational coaching and mentorship programs.
